She's one in a million!
The Make Mine a Million $ Business program selected our very own Kathy Morgan as one of 20 business women finalists out of a field of over 1,000 applicants.

Described as a cross between "The Apprentice" and "American Idol," this exciting event provided these twenty finalists the opportunity to present their business in a 3-minute "elevator pitch" to a panel of business experts and a live audience on March 4, 2008 at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. The event featured female entrepreneurs from Arizona and other regions of the country who competed for business development packages that include money, mentoring and technology assistance to help their businesses grow. The event also included educational and network opportunities in addition to keynote speeches by Governor Janet Napolitano and special guest Nely Galan, Founder, GaLAn Entertainment.

Launched in 2005 by Count Me In for Women's Economic Independence and founding partner OPEN from American Express®, the Make Mine a Million $ Business program was created to help post-start up, women-owned businesses grow to one million dollars in annual revenue. Since the inception, the program has hosted 14 competitions in cities around the country and grown into a nationwide movement.

Our words are hitting the shelves
At Morgan and Company, we’re constantly writing copy for our clients that describes them, their companies and their products. But what do we say when we get to talk about ourselves? We were actually given that opportunity, and it was alternately thrilling, humbling, potentially embarrassing, and ultimately gratifying to see one’s name and words memorialized in print.

“Exploring Digital Workflow” by Penny Ann Dolin is now on the shelves for your reading pleasure. As a professor in Graphic Information Technology at Arizona State University’s College of Science and Technology, Ms. Dolin recognizes that a basic understanding of digital workflow is imperative in today’s marketplace. The book is aimed at graphic design students, with the goal of presenting a comprehensive, hands-on overview of the technical side of what they do. Topics covered in the book are digital asset management, PDF/X-1a, XML conversion, automation, XMP, scripting, project management and more.

The entire seventh chapter, “Making it All Work,” is devoted to interviews with prominent graphics industry professionals, whom Ms. Dolin calls “content creators.” When approached with an opportunity to contribute, Kathy Morgan enthusiastically agreed to offer her 20+ years of experience and insights to the book.

As quoted in the book, Kathy urges young designers who have grown up with technology to recognize that the creative process is so much more than flashy technique. “Use paper and pencil first; that’s where the best ideas come from. I always ask designers who interview with me to bring their sketches and preliminary work. I want to see if you can think. The computer is only a tool. Turn it on only after you’ve turned on the right side of your brain. Nowadays, anyone with a computer can make something look ‘professional’ – so our challenge becomes, what can you as a designer bring to it that [the client] can’t do themselves? What is your value?”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Oh wait, we just did!

Working on one of the 5 Cs
It’s said that the economy of the state of Arizona has been built on “The 5 Cs”: Climate, Citrus, Cotton, Cattle, Copper. And, it’s that fifth C, copper, that’s been contributing specifically to Morgan and Company’s economy during this past year.

Through a creative partnership with BJ Communications www.bjc.com, we designed a stunning folder and informational inserts for BHP Copper Inc., a division of BHP Billiton, one of the world’s largest diversified natural resources companies. The company is currently engaged in dismantling several of Arizona’s copper mines and working to restore the environment in those areas.

This versatile kit contains several informational insert sheets, organized in a standard format that can easily be expanded for newsworthy opportunities. The kit is being used for presentations with governmental entities and in public and community relations efforts. Several pockets allow for flexibility in content.

The design of the folder itself features a copper metallic finish – taken one step beyond the expected with a subtle image of a former terraced copper pit imprinted within it. A strip of pristine Sonoran desert runs across the front, evoking the idea that beauty can be restored from what was once a tremendous scar on the land. The folder and inserts also feature historical sepia-toned photos to reassure lawmakers and residents alike that BHP acknowledges its deep and enduring history with the land and residents of Arizona.

In the process of working with BJ Communications on this project, we’ve added a sixth “C” for “Convenience” – they’re in the same building as we are!
